I just noticed that back to school night is Wednesday September 4th. And that the day the kids are to bring the iPads to school is the following Monday. What do you make if this? Does that mean that the school will talk about 1:world on back to school night? Will they do an informal survey that night? Will they take feedback from parents that night?

Just got the DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP PLEDGE. Last year we did not have this? Or did I miss it?

I noticed several items about the pledge though:

1) Appropriate consequences will be enforced.

What does that mean? Will I have to pay for an iPad if somebody thinks my child harmed the device? Or does it mean that my child will no longer be able to use the device? Very vague wording here. No idea what it really means. What if my child does not help the teacher with questions about a device - because they don't know the answer? Does that mean my child will receive "appropriate consequences?" And what is the consequence for not knowing how to help the teacher?

2) Nothing is said about texting or messaging.

Does this mean that the kids are free to text each other as long as they are texting about the assignment?

I see the statement about "appropriate consequences will be enforced."

This is yet another clear indication that there is no clear plan. Even how the rules will be enforced is not thought out yet. Clearly the school is going to make up the consequences of not following the rules as they go along.

This statement is way to open ended. Do we need to sign this? Or can we just ignore it? Is this a way to "opt out?" if you don't sign it?

It would be interesting to see what the school would do if you did not sign it. Anybody try it?

Wish I had thought of not signing it. I can only guess what the school would do without a signature.

The school could ignore it and let your child use digital technology. Not very likely though because they want everybody to sign it. But they could pretend that they missed the fact that you did not sign it.

The school could not let your child participate in the use of digital technology. In this case it is an opt out. The school is still obligated to teach your child. So that would mean that they would have to use other means to teach your child.

What else can the school do?

Kids can start bringing iPads to school starting tomorrow. However they put them on the rolling rack outside the classroom before class (in their backpack).

The problem I have with this is that the risk is all on the parent again. The teacher says that they can't have the iPads in the classroom because it is too much responsibility for her. So the iPads have to stay outside the classroom. So if they are damaged or stolen outside the classroom the school can say that it is the parents fault.

Again, all the responsibility is on us, not the school. And when we bring iPads to school the school gets what they want.
