What promises were made at back to school night?
At back to school night we were promised that kids would not be playing games on the iPads. However my child indicated Friday (day after after school night) that he played some game on the iPad in the class. However, he is too young to remember the name of the App. But the fact is that he regarded it as a game, not the traditional learning app like "stack the states" or "spelling city."
Anybody got a clue to what it was?
And how do we define "game" vs. learning app?
Also, it was promised at back to school night that kids that bring their own iPad will not get more time than kids that share the devices in the classroom. The question was brought up that if a child brings his own iPad to school, will they have several times the iPad time because they are the sole user of the iPad and the shared ones are cycled between several students? The answer was "no, it does not work that way."
Do we really think that kids that bring their own iPad will have the same amount of time on the device as those that share?

Re: What promises were made at back to school night?
The school has never stated how much time per week will be on the iPads. They have always been very "we can't tell you" type attitude. And "we don't know ourselves."
However, from my observations, it appears that they use them daily in some of the classrooms.
Anybody else have any information about the frequency and duration of iPad use?

It would appear that daily use is normal for some classrooms now.
A request for loading more apps on the student owned iPads has come out from some teachers. It is interesting that some of these apps are more than a few dollars. But it is stated "these apps will be used throughout your child's elementary education career." This is a pretty strong statement considering the life span of an iPad is about three years.

The follow up from back to school night was the parent teachers conferences. Did anybody ask about iPad use? Did anybody ask how much time the kids are spending on the iPads in the classroom?
My conference did not mention iPad use. Only that keyboarding was a requirement now.
